Abstract

Several years ago, our laboratory reported isolation of a virus, HTLV-5, from a Tacnegative T-cell lymphoma/leukemia. To date, however, no cell line has been obtained which consistently produces amounts of virus sufficient to permit detection of reverse transcriptase (RT) or to form the basis for a serologic test. In the process of attempting to develop such a cell line, we found that the lymphocyte cell line, GB, derived from a patient with cutaneous lymphoma/leukemia, produces an inhibitor of RT. Production of this inhibitory factor is transmitted, both by infection and by transfection, to cell lines which do not produce it spontaneously.
