Abstract
Depressive psychosis is a common psychological disorder. In the 1930s electric shock treatment has been generally used in the world, but was discarded due to undesired traumatic results. The last three decades, chemicals such as aminoketones, monoamine oxidase inhibitors, phenothiazines, serotonin uptake inhibitors, tetracyclics, tricyclics have been used with minimal success. These compounds all exhibit various side effects. Although the patients and their families accepted these treatments better than the electric shock but there exist many disadvantages: drugs toxicities and high recurrence rate as well as long term use of tachyphylaxis is inevitable. Recently, there is a great interest in seeking “alternative therapies”. Among the “alternative therapies” acupuncture is one that has the most scientific support.
