Abstract

Alpha-neurotoxins such as alpha-bungarotoxin and cobrotoxin are now used frequently to characterize the nicotinic receptors in vertebrate skeletal muscle and in electric tissue of some kinds of electric fish. Although they also bind to a variety of neuronal preparations which contain nicotinic receptors, but in most cases, this binding fails to block the nicotinic transmission in neuro-muscular junction. So the physiological significance of alpha-neurotoxins binding sites in neural tissue remains unclear.
