The Ventral Nuclei

  • Chapter
The Thalamus

Abstract

In every mammal, with the exception of the monotremes, it is possible to identify at least three cellular components of the ventral nuclear group: the ventral lateral, ventral medial, and ventral posterior nuclei. In many species a ventral anterior nucleus can be distinguished as well and, in higher primates, the ventral lateral nucleus is clearly divided into at least two subnuclei. A ventral posterior inferior nucleus is also commonly identified.

This ever-watchful sentinel of our corporeal frame–whose organ (through the medium of nerves sensation)pervades the whole external surface of the body, including the intestinal canal—placed, as it is, to guard from external injury, this delicate machine— to keep in tune this harp of a thousand strings.
