Abstract

Tracing from a blood donor to each blood product and from blood product to each blood donor is the backbone of quality systems in transfusion medicine and must be assured by the blood transfusion service (BTS). Tracing from each blood product and component to the patient and back from patient to components is just as important, and is done by the hospital. When the blood transfusion service is part of the hospital organisation, both of those arms of tracing can be done by the same organisation, the BTS of the hospital.
