Design for Manufacture and Template-Based Process Planning

Abstract

The engineer today is unaware of the impact that design changes will have on manufacturing functions when the part is only designed and tested for functionality. When the product engineer has met the program objective, the design is released to the manufacturing engineer for a feasibility review and manufacturability study. This is a sequential process and does not allow for trade-off analysis during the initial stages of the design process. This results in a number of iterations between product and manufacturing engineering, which is time consuming and error prone.
