Searching for the Laffer Curve in Transition Economies

  • Chapter
The Eastern Enlargement of the EU

Abstract

The Laffer Curve has been very controversial from the very beginning. This simple idea has had both powerful supporters, such as former U.S. president Ronald Reagan, who was convinced by its transparent logic, but also very renowned opponents such as James Tobin, who called it “as ancient as it is trivial”. Tobin argued that the idea was purely political, and that neither economic theory nor empirical research had been able prove that any such relationship really existed.
