Abstract
The island of Nauru illustrates the issue of sustainability well, and some would say starkly. Nauru is an atoll in the central Pacific, about 21 square km, with a circumference of about 19 km. A normal person can walk around the entire island at a leisurely pace in about three hours. Nauru is also among the smallest sovereign states in the world, being inhabited by about 11,000 people, of whom about 8,000 are citizens of the state of Nauru and the rest are expatriates, mainly from other Pacific islands and China.
