The Impact of Climate Change on Agriculture: A Global Perspective

There is growing concern about the prospect of global warming caused by the accumulation of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Several studies address the impact of climate change on the agricultural sector in various countries (Marland, McCarl, and Schneider, 1999). While many of these studies assess the impact of climate change on farm commodity yields and prices, only a few address the problems of rising seawater levels, water supplies, pest dynamics, and energy price increases. This chapter focuses on each of these issues. We present a comprehensive overview of the implications of climate change on agricultural productivity, including changes in yield from increased temperatures, variations in water supply, increased carbon concentration in the atmosphere, pest movement, and other factors. We also address the implications of climate change on water and land resources, in particular, the issues associated with rising water levels. We discuss strategies to slow the pace of global warming, the effects of incentives to conserve energy, and the benefits and institutional changes resulting from the implementation of soil carbon sequestration in farming and agro-forestry. We conclude with a presentation of policy implications for developed and developing countries.
