Abstract

Meiosis is a specialized cell division that is essential for sexual reproduction. During meiosis haploid gametes are produced, so that the diploid number can be restored after fertilization. This is achieved through two continuous rounds of nuclear divisions following a single round of DNA synthesis. The first nuclear division results in homologous chromosomes pairing and segregating from each other. The second nuclear division is similar to mitotic nuclear division in which sister chromatids separate.
