Roles of the Bötzinger Complex in the Formation of Respiratory Rhythm

Part of the book series: Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology ((AEMB,volume 499))

Abstract

The Bötzinger complex (Böt.C) is a group of expiratory neurons in the vicinity of retrofacial nucleus.1-5 Electrophysiological and histological studies have shown that this group of neurons is inhibitory in nature and has widespread axonal projections to medullary and spinal respiratory neurons. 6-8 Electrical and chemical stimulation of the Böt.C resulted in strong inhibition of inspiration. 9, 10 Unilateral focal cold block of this structure in cat produced shortening of expiratory duration and increase of respiratory rate.11 These findings suggest that the Böt.0 may be of critical importance in the formation of respiratory rhythm. 12, 13 In order to test this hypothesis, we examined the roles of the Böt.C in the respiratory phase transition14 and expiratory phase formation.15
