Abstract

Show that the vibrational frequency of a diatomic molecule consisting of two atoms of masses M 1 , and M 2 is ν = (l / 2π) (k0 / M r )1/2, where k0 is the constant of the elastic restoring force and M r is the so-called reduced mass, such that 1/M r =1/M 1 + 1/M 2 .
