Abstract
Since the discovery of cytokinins (Miller et al 1955) it has become clear that, in addition to promoting plant cells to divide in culture, this class of plant hormones influences a wide range of events during growth and development (Taiz and Zeiger 1998). For example, cytokinins inhibit leaf senescence, root elongation and lateral root initiation. They are involved in promoting leaf and cotyledon expansion, auxiliary meristem growth, nutrient mobilisation, root hair growth and stomatal opening. Cytokinins do not function in isolation of other plant hormones. Their stimulation of cell division in tissue culture requires the presence of auxin, and it is evident that in many responses cytokinins act both in synergy and antagonism with auxin, ethylene and gibberellin. Similarly, cytokinin and light signalling pathways interact in the regulation of chloroplast development and anthocyanin biosynthesis. There also appear to be strong interactions between cytokinin, nitrate and sugar signals. The importance of this class of hormones in plant growth and development has prompted many studies of their mechanism of action (see recent reviews of Hare and van Stadon 1997, Schmülling et al 1997, Brault and Maldiney 1999) and these have led to the identification of potential components of cytokinin signalling pathways and targets of them. In this review I will consider the progress that has been made towards the identification of cytokinin binding proteins and genes encoding receptors that are implicated in cytokinin signalling and discuss whether or not any of these may be cytokinin receptors.
