Abstract

The operation of the first 1 petawatt (PW) laser at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) in 1996 provided a laser power which has not yet been equaled elsewhere and it enabled a range of novel scientific investigations which are reviewed here and briefly set in context with theoretical work and other related experiments.
