Abstract

Psychiatric syndromes are common in all organ transplant patients, both candidates and recipients, with etiological contributions including biological (e.g. organ failure), social (e.g. disruption of support system), and iatrogenic factors (e.g. medication side-effects). Of course, the types, frequency, and causation of psychiatric syndromes vary both with the type of transplant and stage of treatment (disease pre-transplant, early post-operative, chronic maintenance treatment). In this chapter, we will focus on psychiatric syndromes primarily due to biological (“organic”) factors associated with organ failure, transplant surgery, and immunosuppressant drugs, and psychopharmacologic treatment of these syndromes.
