Abstract

Indoleamine-related ß-carbolines are proposed as natural MPTP-like toxicants or protoxicants. An enzyme in mammalian brain methylates ß-carbolines, sequentially forming 2-mono-[N]-methylated and 2,9-di-[N,N’]-methylated ß-carbolinium cations. These N-methylated ß-carbolinium cations are structural analogs of MPP+ with a nitrogen bridge. Because of their similar neurotoxicity to MPP+, they could be underlying factors in idiopathic Parkinson’s disease.
