Abstract
Sociology is a forum in which dialogue between systems theory and critical theory is ongoing. Sociologists now elaborate the main systems theory of sociology, differentiation theory, in ways that satisfy salient points in the critiques made against them. They situate differentiation as the master trend of social change, but they describe patterned departures from that trend and describe several countervailing forces that work against uniform differentiation.
