Abstract

In Chapters 5, 6, and 13, we saw how the different size and electronic structure of an impurity produce a local strain field which breaks the periodicity of the crystal lattice. The lattice distortion contributes toward all of the electronic properties of metallic solids, but their evaluation is quite difficult due to both breakage of the crystal symmetry and lack of knowledge of the true impurity-induced strain field. Poor agreement between the calculated and experimental values of the various electronic properties forces us to investigate in detail the size effect. In this chapter, we will describe only simplified models and approximate theories used to evaluate the contribution to Δn(r), ΔV(r), and EFG (the basic physical quantities) due to the impurity-induced strain field.
