Abstract
Water uptake in seeds is in general a triphasie process with the first phase represented by imbibition. The second phase shows the onset of major metabolic events while the third phase is concurrent with radicle elongation. Imbibition, however, occurs in all seeds, viable or not. Hydration is clearly a necessary, but not sufficient, condition for the initiation of biological activity in seeds. The rate at which water uptake occurs should provide information on seed viability.
