Abstract
The incidence of melanoma between the early 1960s and the mid-1980s increased at a rate of 3 to 7% in countries such as Canada, United States, Denmark, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, Poland, Norway, Slovenia, Sweden, United Kingdom, and New Zealand (Armstrong and Kricker, 1994). In Australia the incidence also increased [but the increase from birth cohorts of ages below 50 seem to have slowed down (Boyle et al., 1995)]. Some investigators in the United States further pointed out that the incidence of melanoma has been up more than 1800% since the 1930s (Rigel et al., 1996). It was thus claimed that the incidence is going to rise in the next 10 to 20 years and that the mortality rate will continue to rise (Rigel et al., 1996). By the year 2000, 1 in every 75 Americans is expected to have melanoma (Rigel et al., 1996)
