Self-Directed Search

Abstract

The Self-Directed Search (SDS) is a self-administered, self-scored, and self-interpreted vocational interest assessment tool. The design of the SDS enables it to be used with or without guidance from a counselor to help an individual examine vocational or educational environments which may be complementary to his or her interests and personality. Since the SDS simulates the work that a counselor and client might do over the course of a few sessions, it can be used by people who do not want or do not have access to a counselor. The design and use of the SDS also enables counselors to increase the number of individuals they can reach and allows more time for addressing concerns which require direct intervention. This chapter covers the theory and rationale that are the backbone of the SDS as well as its construction and development, administration and scoring, and interpretive guidelines. A case example will also illustrate the general use of the SDS.
