Abstract

Syphilis is a recurrent treponematosis of acute and chronic evolution. It is sexually transmitted. There is not complete agreement among authors about the origin of syphilis and some state that it was disseminated into the new world by the European expansion in the 14th— 16thcenturies. But periostitis consistent withTreponema palliduminfection has been detected by X-ray exams in mummies of the pre-Colombian period in South America (155).
