Abstract

Although indications for emergency thoracotomy and techniques of managing cardiovascular trauma have been discussed in previous chapters, this topic deserves special emphasis. The incidence of penetrating trauma to the heart varies between centers, but overall affects 0.5% of patients admitted after penetrating injury. Survival is linked to rapidity of pre-hospital transport, immediate recognition of the injury, and rapid operative intervention.
