Traumatic Lung Hernia

Lung herniation, defined as the protrusion of lung parenchyma and pleura outside of the chest wall, is a rare entity with less than 300 cases reported in the literature. Lung hernias were first classified in 1845 by Morel-Lavelle as either congenital or acquired. Of the 80% of lung hernias that fall into the acquired category, most are traumatic. They can also be subdivided by location: 35% are supraclavicular and 65% are thoracic or intercostal.
