Abstract

Increasingly bandwidth-hungry applications and services justify the need for ultra high-speed all-optical (photonic) local and metropolitan area networks. In particular, the WDM technology is commonly viewed as the leading choice in building such photonic LANs/MANs. In WDM networks, multiple wavelength channels typically operating at electronic transmission rates are supported in parallel to fully exploit the enormous potential bandwidth of a single optical fiber. Furthermore, optical packet switching appears to be the preferred technique for the development of highly bandwidth-efficient future telecommunication networks.
