In the local and metropolitan area environment, all-optical packet switching can be already achieved with current optical technology. Particularly, optical packet-switched WDM ring network prototypes are being built and experimentally studied in several research laboratories, e.g. [White00, Shrikhande00b, Summerfield97], as addressed in Subsection 2.2.3
