Both laboratory-based and naturalistic research findings suggest that situational factors, rather than personality traits and characteristics, are more likely to influence whether or not we will help someone in distress. An understanding of these powerful situational determinants, typically outside of one’s conscious awareness, can greatly aid patients in the midst of crisis or trauma counseling.
