Abstract
Azoricidae (Demospongiae, ‘lithistids’) consists only of two genera, Leiodermatium and Jereicopsis, and at least six species, differentiated on the basis of habitus and microscleres. They occur in the Atlantic and Pacific in deep water. The family is based on the presence of strongly spinose rhizoclone desmas; microscleres when present are raphides; choanosomal and ectosomal oxeas may also be present. Future studies may prove it to be polyphyletic and the family may even disappear.
