Nonlinear Optics and Surface Applications

  • Chapter
An Introduction to Laser Spectroscopy

Abstract

In this chapter some of the key ideas of optical nonlinearity are introduced and reviewed. The well-established uses of nonlinear optical components for frequency conversion are then discussed, followed by a survey of other more adventurous and more recent applications in surface science. To begin, we consider the conceptual heritage of the subject area.
