Interactions between dendritic cells

Dendritic cells (DC) of multiple lineages and with functions varying from primary stimulation of different types of B and T cell responses to generation of tolerance are being described. A common property for the identification of DC includes expression of MHC class II molecules and co-stimulatory molecules together with a functional capacity to stimulate primary immune responses. However, such cells may be cells efficient at transferring both MHC and other antigens — including acquired exogenous antigens - to other cells which, in turn, utilise these antigens to stimulate primary immune responses1,2. These observations raise questions about the true nature of the cells that directly stimulate primary lymphocyte responses. All so-called `DC’ may be efficient at producing transferable processed antigenic materials but only a proportion may have the property of stimulating lymphocytes directly.
