The Development of a Simple Associative Test of Olfactory Learning and Memory

  • Chapter
Chemical Signals in Vertebrates 9

Abstract

The information provided by olfactory signals has traditionally been investigated to gain an understanding of social interactions among mammals (Brown and Macdonald, 1985; Schellinck and Brown, 1999). Olfactory paradigms are also important for the study of basic memory processes in rodents (Otto and Eichenbaum, 1992). When tested with olfactory stimuli, rats appear to process information in a way similar to humans. For example, they can develop a learning set (Slotnick and Katz, 1974; Slotnick et al. 2000), appear to understand the relational organization among a series of odor items, i.e., transitive inference (Bunsey and Eichenbaum, 1996) and can perform sophisticated matching:non-matching-to-sample tasks (Winters et al., 2000).
