Abstract
Supplementary sacculi (sacs) at the openings of the cheek pouches are a unique anatomical structure found only in two species of Phodopus hamsters: Phodopus sungorus and P. campbelli, the subject of this report. Vasilieva and Feoktistova (1993) demonstrated the importance of the creamy secretion from these sacs in P. campbelli for normal growth, development, and survival during the first month of life. Aside from its possible role in nutrition, the strong smelling secretion is suspected to play roles in intraspecific communication (Feoktistova and Vasilieva, 1995) and in defensive interactions (Krischke, 1986). We propose here that this odorous secretion is also used to scent mark cached foods with odors that function to facilitate the food’s retrieval.
