The Study of Deviant Behavior

Retrospect and Prospect

  • Chapter
Social Deviance

Abstract

The theoretical statements, methods, and empirical analyses reported in this volume are not presented as the state of our current understanding of the causes of deviant behavior, but rather are presented as a template for a useful logic of procedure for increasing our understanding of deviant behavior. Starting with a guiding theoretical framework and a methodological approach, we estimated a series of models using a systematic elaboration strategy to decompose hypothesized linear relations, increase explained variance, uncover suppressor effects, and determine scope conditions for the hypothesized models.
