Abstract
I was elected a member of the NAS in 1979, but before addressing my activities in the Academy, I want to mention how I first learned about my election. In 1979 I received a Fellowship from the Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), financed by Japan which required me to spend a month there giving lectures at several universities. I had been to Japan before and I liked the Japanese and enjoyed their food and saki. Here are a few things that I recall about that month in Japan.
