Abstract

Today, we see companies achieve strategic advantage through the deployment of IT. That is to say, if the company is able to manage it’s IT well — it might then become the essence of that strategic advantage. In practice we see that many organisations are not able to successfully manage the implementation of IT solutions up to and including the operational phase. Projects do not deliver the promised functionality, have budget and time overruns. When finished, the potential provided in the applications is not fully realised. Today’s software is functionally rich and complex to implement. This complexity needs a management approach that differs from traditional project management approaches. Management attention should remain focused on the business objectives until the moment that these are actually achieved. Drawing on personal experience as a practitioner, the author sketches a management method for the implementation of process-underpinning software up to and including the operational phase.
