Abstract
Animal models have long been recognized to be useful in understanding disorders of human iron homeostasis. Although the advent of molecular biology has vastly improved our understanding of the biochemistry and cellular biology of iron transport, studies in testtubes and tissue culture cells cannot lead to a total understanding of human iron disorders. This is because human iron disorders are invariably abnormalities of iron balance, resulting from defects in regulation of intestinal iron absorption or inappropriate distribution of iron among the tissues of the body. Thus, molecular studies cannot replace animal models in this area.
