Abstract

In 1948, Elie Monnier, the French navy support ship of Groupe d’Etude et de Recherche Sous-Marine (GERS), undertook a survey of the Mahdia wreck. This wreck was discovered in 1907 by Greek sponge divers and excavated by helmeted divers from 1908 to 1913. It was the first scientific approach to exploration of an archaeological site made by scuba divers, although the survey was short and the method still in its infancy. The experience gained on this occasion by two French navy officers, Jacques-Yves Cousteau and Phillippe Tailliez, allowed them to be involved in two archaeological excavations that marked a step in the history of underwater archaeology.
