Abstract
In 1998, the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology (SCIAA), celebrated 35 years of advocating and conducting archaeology in the state. For most of those 25 years, the state has had an underwater archaeology program within the SCIAA, which conducts and monitors archaeology conducted on the state’s bottomlands. From 1973 to 1987, South Carolina’s underwater archaeology was directed by Alan Albright, who headed the SCIAA’s Underwater Archaeology Division. With Albright’s retirement in 1987, Christopher Amer was hired as the new division head. Under his leadership, emphasis was placed on: (1) inventorying and assessing a wide variety of submerged cultural resources; (2) public education and appropriate public recreational access to sites; and (3) drafting and implementing appropriate legislation to support and guide these strategies—in other words, management of the state’s maritime cultural heritage.
