Abstract

Pituitary corticotroph POMC gene expression is regulated by hypothalamic CRH as well as several neuroimmunoendocrine modulators, e.g. gp130 cytokines (see also Chapter 6). While CRH action is mediated by a cAMPdependent pathway, effects of gp130 cytokines are mediated by the JakSTAT signaling cascade. Synergistic crosstalk of different stimuli and signaling cascades enables the HPA axis to show a rapid and profound response to inflammatory and stress stimuli.
