Broadband Network Traffic Modeling

Abstract

In this chapter, we discuss issues relating to the modeling of broadband traffic. A brief overview of the models proposed in literature is also presented. In particular, we discuss various monofractal models proposed for video traffic like fractional ARIMA by Garret and Willinger [23], the self similar traffic model based on the ON - OFF model proposed by Taqqu et.al [27], the Multifractal wavelet model (MWM) proposed by Riedi et.al [40], and the wavelet-based models proposed by Ma and Ji [62]. We mention practical aspects involved in the modeling of broadband traffic and take a note of the key performance measures to be taken. We also give an overview of the results of multiple scaling undertaken in recent years by Willinger, Feldmann and Gilbert [77], [78],[79] to highlight the need for multifractal models. There has been also models proposed on Chaotic maps to model network traffic [80]. We have not used the chaotic models as a part of this study. The chapter is a prelude to the discussion on the V.V.G.M model that we propose in Chapter 5 towards modeling network traffic through multifractal cascades.
