Abstract

Moldova’s major currency crisis came on the heels of the August 1998 Russian crisis. The crisis led to the rapid depreciation of the domestic currency and dramatic changes in the structure of the balance of payments. Capital flight brought the country to the verge of default. While the real sector suffered severely, the banking sector survived the crisis relatively intact.
