Abstract
This chapter reviews the most important aspects of the asynchronous transfer mode. The emphasis is put on those concepts which are relevant to ATM routing and connection control mechanisms. An important protocol for ATM routing is the Private Network Node Interface (PNNI). It specifies mechanisms for automatic network configuration as well as signaling procedures and processing of topology state information for dynamic routing.
