Abstract

The definition of insomnia changes and broadens over time - proof that it is still not completely understood by patients and clinicians. Added to complaints of sleep onset difficulties, and insufficient sleep and recurrent nocturnal awakenings, are those of daytime sleepiness, fatigue, irritability, lack of concentration and inadequate performance. Many chronic insomniacs complain of daytime sleepiness and this may constitute a risk factor, in terms of accidents at home and at work, and the costs to society.
