Abstract
During the last decade advances in microtechnology have resulted in the development of ambulatory sleep recording systems which fulfil all the demands and are able to record everything that can be recorded in a sleep laboratory. The technical differences have become so small, that the same recording equipment can be used for both sleep laboratory settings and out-patient use. The role of ambulatory sleep recording has thus shifted from the question of what is technically feasible, because nearly anything is possible, to that of the strategies involved. It is necessary to consider the effectiveness of diagnostic procedures in terms of final therapeutic outcome and costs in order to define a new role for ambulatory sleep recording.
