Abstract

The parishioners of Mill Hill Chapel in Leeds, England, were disturbed. Their new minister, Joseph Priestley, was spending all his spare time at Jake and Nell’s brewery. Had the devil drink taken command of their preacher? Speculation was rife and rumor spread like wildfire, even reaching the ears of the cause of their worry. Yet he continued in his investigation of the contents of the brewer’s vat. The year was 1767, and his studies were related to a recently discovered gas, then known as fixed air and today known as carbon dioxide.
