Abstract

Chronic diseases affect everyone regardless of race, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status. There are many types of chronic diseases. Some afflict many with pain or inconvenience but allow individuals many years of life; examples are diabetes, asthma, epilepsy, and arthritis. Other chronic diseases are life threatening and often cause death; examples are cardiovascular disease, cancer, and AIDS. This entry discusses cardiovascular disease as representative of chronic disease. It presents an overview of the evidence-based interventions that work, might work, and do not work in the primary prevention of cardiovascular disease.
