Abstract

The collision cross-section, σ c , is an averaged value that is proportional to the probability that a certain type of collisional process will occur, and is a function of the closing velocities of the particles. At times it will also be a function of the angle between incident particle trajectory and a line connecting the centers of the particles as they collide; in this case, integrating over all possible collision configurations will yield the correct cross-section.
