Abstract
The climbing fibers were first described by Ramón y Cajal (1888) and later by Van Gehuchten (1891), Retzius (1892b), Held (1897), Athias (1897), Estable (1923), and Jakob (1928). Light microscopy (LM) and transmission electron microscopic (TEM) studies of vertebrate cerebellar cortex (Carrea, Reissig, & Mettler, 1947; Chan-Palay & Palay, 1970, 1971a, 1971b; Fox, Andrade, & Schwyn, 1967b; Larramendi & Victor, 1967; Murphy, O’Leary, & Corntlath, 1973; O’Leary, Petty, Smith, & Inukai, 1968; O’Leary, Inukai, & Smith, 1971; Palay & Chan-Palay, 1974; Rivera-Domínguez, Mettler, & Novack, 1974; Scheibel & Scheibel, 1954; Szentágothai & Rajkovits, 1959) have supported and extended the basic morphological aspects of climbing fibers as reported by the pioneering account of Ramón y Cajal (1888, 1955).
