Abstract
The first cluster is exemplified by broad shapes and very little emphasis on form or composition; there is a certain up-beat mood to them, but very little idiosyncrasy or originality. So we may interpret the factor scores, which are, in descending order, “expansiveness”, “informality”, and “timidity” (see Table 3 in the Appendix). To a greater degree than any other cluster they also tell a story, and tell it broad strokes, as it were; none of the artists worked on their image under magnification. We may say that stylistically what they have is a certain narrative informality.1
The cluster is also quite homogeneous, in that none of the individuals could be assigned to any other cluster (Table 3b), and it is highly distinct from the others because no other cluster shares either the expansiveness or this degree of informality.
