Abstract

Magnetically confined hot plasmas, such as those in pinches, tokamaks and stellarators, have for many years been used for the spectroscopy of multiply charged ions. In addition to hydrogen isotopes these plasmas also contain a number of heavier elements in smaller quantities. We will discuss spectroscopic studies of neutral and ionized Be, C, and O observed at the JET tokamak in Culham, UK. In recent years the Zeeman effect in tokamak plasmas has been investigated in detail. This will be discussed together with resonant excitation processes and analogies between astrophysical and fusion plasmas.
